The dogma of heteronormativity demands that women and queers reside as unsafe, invisible, ignorant and/or disempowered beings with disappeared and fractured histories, and that men will appropriate our liberties.
This program of 8 videos supposes that bodies are of paramount concern and a primary tool from which to begin this transformation. The video selections span a period of production and consciousness of about a decade, and reflected in these monitors are themes of inquiry relating to the body double, double vision and selves, divided.
The series title Our bodies, our selves is lifted from the groundbreaking and internationally popular women’s health book Our Bodies, Ourselves, first published in 1973 by the Boston Women's Health Book Collective (USA). The book arose out of a 35¢, 136-page booklet called Women and Their Bodies (1970), written by 12 Boston feminist activists - the first comprehensive health publication to be written for women, by women.
