She studied Philosophy and Architecture before being given a place at Prague Film School, having previously worked as a scriptwriter, actor and director's assistant at Barrondov Studios where she was not admitted. Considered to be one of the most innovative and radical of the New wave of Czech cinema -the first openly feminist director-, she suffered political censorship from the early works on (Strop, 1961, Pytel blech, 1962). Forced into inactivity between 1969 and 1975, she was prohibited from attending the film festivals she was invited to in those years.

Sedmikrásky (Daisies). Czech Republic, 1966. 73’
Written in collaboration with Ester Krumbachova, this film opened a year late due to the disagreement of the authorities. Regarded as a psychedelic surrealist response to Gentlemen Prefer Blondes by H. Hawks, it tells the adventures of two young women who decide to be bad in a hopeless world.
